Dance in Two Dimensions
2022
Naturally dyed repurposed fabric, wooden embroidery hoopsIn my final year of high school, I developed stress fractures in both feet, and suddenly, ballet came to an abrupt halt. I felt as if I had been flattened into two dimensions. This piece was created to explore what it means to be limited in mobility as a dancer, and where new types of movement can emerge from within the boundaries of physical limitation. The wooden hoops are strapped to the arms and legs so that the shapes of the limbs are held in position—a reference to casts that hold bones in place. The naturally dyed fabrics closely resemble the environment in which I spent much of my time while healing, calling us back to the landscapes we inhabit.
